Officials of Fairfield, Conn., are facing an estimated $10 million cost to remediate the town’s contaminated fill pile after the contractor hired to operate the fill pile submitted a fraudulent performance bond. The contractor and several town officials face charges in connection with an illegal dumping scheme at the pile.
